I see-wear to mother nature, I've had enough of being assessed, policed, and evaluated already. Didn't I get hired after a lengthy process? I've been on the job all of 6 months. Can I have some air, some peace, some respect? Last week was merit forms due, this week, I have two peer reviews, and next week, I have the follow up meeting with the chair and dean to discuss the merit form.
On the other hand, I've been invited to faculty appreciation dinner by a student. I'm not all about sororities, but I am about students. I was moved that she wants to appreciate me. It feels good to be appreciated. BTW, she's known me all of 4 weeks and thinks I need appreciating.
And, next week, I'm off to beautiful Albuquerque to the SWTX Pop Culture/American Culture Conference. The weinerdog is looking forward to 5 days in heaven aka grannie's house.
On a funny note: I got narrative comments from student evaluations yesterday. I have 2 favorites:
"Due to the instructor, I learned more about the writing process than all 4 years of high school combined. I was so moved by her, I changed my major to English."
"If she has any weaknesses she hides them well. -example: I'm pretty sure she wears a cape and fights crime when she is not at the university."
The first is SO nice, and I know the latter is a play on my name, but I appreciate it - rhetorically.
So, I'm ok with assessment. I'm just feeling over-assessed right now. boohoo

Better than being over-assed, which is often a result of grad school.
We had a New Faculty Academy our first year - monthly meetings of dullness, and peer reviews, and the dean of the school visits one class session of untenured faculty once every semester -- so that'll be going on until I've been on the job 6 years. And here you aren't even eligible for a raise your first year. Ever. At all. Nada. So it could be worse!
Hang in there, superwoman!

I loved both of your students' comments -- and those truly are what make the over-assessing and smothering worth it; just always remember why you're doing what you're doing -- the students.
I assess you as awesome. I assess your students as awesome too. With comments like that from students, I would tell the department to F the F off.
I am jealous of your trip to NM. Eat some green chile for me.
