Logic

So, I've got this upper level persuasive writing and logic class and we've read some Aristotle, Quintillian, Isocrates, and the Dissoi Logoi in the past weeks. My students have had really good discussions in applying these "dead, white guys" to the presidential candidate websites and some political cartoons. These texts aren't easy, and I don't expect them to have rote memory of the concepts, but in this engagement with these texts in a relevant arena, the students are embracing the concepts of character, kairos, topoi, etc. And, it's exciting to me. Thank GOD for my students bc the "other" stuff is SO distracting.

I've been thinking about my C's presentation on visual literacy and its ties to civic literacy. I hope that next week, Spring Break, I'll be able to put together an interesting piece. It seems to me that New Orleans is the best place to talk civic literacy.

My dad turned 83 Friday. The spouse and I went to see him and my mom yesterday. He's slow, but he's good.

Happy Birthday to your Dad!

I wish I could go to new Orleans with you guys. I could learn and discuss all sorts of your fantastic ideas, and we could be silly.
