I live with a gamer. This means that since Tues at 10am, on and off, he's been playing GTA4. He's so pumped. And, alot of it is interestingly interactive. NPR even had a story about it. So, from my new media mind, the game could be really interesting linguistically and rhetorically. There's alot of reliance on the cell phone.
Social commentary, yes. Alot of stealing cars, yes. Alot of killing cops, yes. But it's so much more. I'll ask more questions once he beats it, but for right now, I know the main character is like Slim on The Wire, and I understand Slim's character.
When he steals a cop car, he can be a cop. And, his vernacular is shifting. He "jacks" a car. He "caps" people. He fights the need to run REAL people off the road when they drive badly.
Last night, he said he'd made a good decision to not go to the stripclub, but to take his Michelle to a comedy theatre. Today, he confessed that he had to view a cheat to try to avoid killing a cop. It didn't work. Oh well, kudos to him for trying.
My weinerdog continues to stare at him like he's crazy. I'm not....yet.

HAHA...we are living the same life. I came home the other day to find my husband with a headset on, challenging his friend from BG to a "death match" in GTA4.
Oh man. It is an intricate game, to say the least!
I like that he tried to avoid killing the cop. I didn't think humanity was apart of Grand Theft Auto. K has proven me wrong.
