Today, in the persuasive writing and logic class I teach, we discussed alternative approaches to persuasive writing: feminist, black preachers, asian students, native americans, working class, and activist groups. It was one of the best classes I've had. The students were really engaged in the discussion, which moved away from the structural approaches we've been studying. I thought they might balk at the theory shift, but they embraced it.
Then, I had tech and prof writing and most of the class was gone to a conference, so not much progress was made. I feel sorry for my students in that class because life gets in the way for many of them. So much that they don't take the assignments, which can really benefit their skills in the marketplace, seriously. I struggle with ways to reach them in practical, yet academic, ways. Conference time, I think.

hey thanks for letting me borrow this book! not only is it helping me with my paper, its helping me with my hate mail business! haha.
no problem. prof giving a former student a book. craziness...
That was a really good class. I liked that we all got to talk about our own thoughts on the articles. I wish I had enough time to really work with the articles and critically think about them.
We recetnly discussed teaching tech. comm in a practical and academic way and not to be afraid of incorporating theory. But it is a balance.
Or so they say.
