So, next week is finals and today, my jr/sr class is turning in portfolios where they had to substantially revise 3 major papers, indicate additions through a different font (so they can visualize the changes) attach a cover sheet to each essay that indicates all revisions practices and reflect on the practice of revision. This will be a lot of reading for me for the weekend, but it's only 14 students and I think they are grasping the idea of real revision. Here's some people I made them read to contemplate revision and reflection.
Stephen King - On Writing excerpt
Nancy Sommers - "Between the Drafts"
Mike Rose - Lives on the Boundary excerpt
Henry Louis Gates, Jr - "On the Writer's Voice"
Langston Hughes - "How to be a Bad Writer in 10 Easy Lessons"
EB White - "On the Essayist"
Maxine Hong Kingston - "Writing for Oneself"
Annie Dillard - "On Writing Life"
So, I hope the forced revision via the portfolio works. I think, based on one-on-one conferences, that most of them have embraced the concept.
Have I mentioned that one of the revisions is a group paper?...maybe what they say about me in the halls is true. I gave them 5 class periods to work on it....does that make it better?

Damn, nazi!
Just kidding, haha. No, I think that's a great idea. Students really do need help grasping revision. I am working on e-portfolios with some of my students and a major part of that is revision and reflection.
And I've read most of the works you've listed! Good choices.
Finally, Jon and I put up our Christmas tree today and as I put up my weiner dog ornament, I thought of you! ;o) Miss you!
aw, gotta luv the weinerdog. wait till you get my "holiday" card!
