So, not only is my knee shaking things up in my life, the school has been too. I have 10 visiting Ukrainian students and their prof in my Persuasive Writing class. Last Friday, I had 2 additional visitors from Thailand and a visiting prof from my school. We talked about gender differences in persuasion techniques and the use of men and women as persuasive tools in advertising.
Today, the Ukrainians helped with peer reviews for the last essay of the semester. The enrolled students loved it. It's interesting to see how the Ukrainian students evaluate writing. One one hand, they were very direct and globally helpful in their comments; on the other hand, their evals were pretty prescriptive. Wed, we'll look at 2 female writers and see if they have different styles of persuasion. I think it's interesting to look at these things after studying the classics and the canon: Aristotle, Toulmin, and Rogerian, etc.
The knee thing is exhausting physically AND mentally. arg.
BTW, we're working through the tv series THE WIRE, and we love it. raw and balanced.
And, one of my students wrote a Linguistics paper over Internet language, specifically the impact of gaming culture, especially World of Warcraft on Internet language. It was an interesting premise. And, he almost totally pulled it off. With revision, it would be awesome.

You teach really interesting sounding classes. I want to take them. Did the Ukranians and Taiwanese have different views on the use of men and women as persuasive tools?
I have heard nothing but good things about The Wire. I think I will put it on my Netflix list.
Do you have to use crutches?
no crutches yet...optional he said. I opted NO. I told Laura crutches are for wimps.
I'll be on them post-surgery, tho...for prob 2 weeks.
The Uk's and Taiwanese pretty much agreed that bodies/sex are useful persuasive tools, esp in advertising.
